A food hall is to be opened in St. Petersburg’s oldest department store Gostiny Dvor next summer.
A major restaurant holding company intends to invest in the project. The food hall will occupy two stories of the building facing Lomonosov Street. At present, the concept of the space is being developed. The cost of the project will depend on the condition of the building. In experts’ estimation, the project will be worth at least 54 million rubles (740 thousand dollars). Olga Sharygina, Managing Director with a property development company, comments: ‘In the 1990s and early 2000s, the ground floor of Gostiny Dvor actually was a permanent food hall with all those tables and people eating food they bought in different cafes. The space of 1,800 square meters allows of opening more than 20-25 cafes and restaurants. Most likely they will be in the upper segment.’ The project may take 5-6 years to pay back. Apart from Gostiny Dvor, other shopping malls are considered for food halls, including Nevsky Center and Mercury.
