Would you like to feel the atmosphere of Europe and stay in Russia at the same time? A trip to Kaliningrad, the former Koenigsberg will give you that amazing opportunity.
The history of the city begins in the middle of the XIII century, when the Knights of the Teutonic Order captured the fortress of Tuvangste. The conquerors founded their own castle on the banks of the Pregolya River and named it Koenigsberg, "The Royal Mountain".
As time went, some settlements grew around the castle. Altshadt, the "old city" appeared by the fortress walls, Lebenicht was built nearby. Formally both of them were given the status of independent cities, but Altstadt and Lebenicht were united as a whole and were called Koenigsberg. The third settlement, which received the status of the city, was Kneiphof.
Koenigsberg developed and become the center of science and art. The famous inhabitants of Koenigsberg are: the philosopher Immanuel Kant, the writer Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, the composer Richard Wagner. Koenigsberg permanently attracted our compatriots. Tsar Peter I and Empress Catherine II visited the city, there were Karamzin, Zhukovsky, Bryullov, Herzen, Nekrasov. During the Seven Years' War, for a short while Koenigsberg even was part of the Russian Empire.
A new page of history began for the city in 1946 when, named "Kaliningrad", it became part of the Soviet Union.
The Kaliningrad region is well-known not only for its cultural heritage. Here you can admire an amazing Baltic Sea with hidden deposits of amber. Ninety percent of the world's stock of the famous "sun stone" is located in the Kaliningrad region, and amber jewelry made by local craftsmen will be the best gift.
There are scattered charming resort towns along the Baltic coast: Svetlogorsk (formerly Rauschen), Zelenogradsk (Kranz), Amber (Palmniken). Each of them has its own special, incomparable atmosphere.
A very special place in Kaliningrad region is the Curonian Spit - a unique nature reserve. There is no similar area anywhere else in the world. This is a narrow strip of land separating the Baltic Sea from the beautiful Curonian Lagoon, smooth as a mirror. The sand spit begins at Zelenogradsk and stretches to the Lithuanian city of Klaipeda.
